FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How long have you been around? We have been conducting classes succesfully in the same location at Bangsar Puteri Condominium since 1998. What's the difference between 'regular' and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu? In Japan there are many different traditional Ju Jitsu schools, most of them which can trace its lineage back to its original founders and registered with the Japanese government are recognized as "ko ryu" or original/old school. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is different in that it was exported to S. America as part of the Japanese Empire's plans to colonize S.America in the late 1800/ early 1900's and a form of Judo was taught there in the early 1900's. Since that time Jiu Jitsu as it was called there, underwent its own modification and the current version emphasizes the use of ground leverage and submission techniques. Since the early 1990's BJJ has proven its effectiveness in no-rules combat against all Asian and Western martial arts and has repeatedly demonstrated its effectiveness as a great confidence boosting tool in and out of the gym. Some Japanese or European Ju Jitsu teach punches, kicks, throws and traditional wooden weapons and set forms as part of their curriculum. Most BJJ schools teach at least one of four levels including: sport (gi) jiu jitsu, no-gi jiu jitsu, mixed martial arts incorporating strikes and self defense depending on the instructor and their lineage.

What is a FIZFIT Workout? This is an intensive physical fitness training exercise program using different training protocols for adults including calisthenics (e.g. squats, pushups, sit ups, etc.), exercise bands, balance balls, suspended cables, and kettlebells to exercise the body’s cardiovascular system, joint and tendon health, and muscles in the body. We focus on strengthening the body’s main hinge, commonly referred to as the “core” through a variety of movements of increasing difficulty as well as raising the heart rate through intensive movements. It’s not yoga, it’s not Pilates. It’s much more intensive and dynamic. There are no “dance steps” to learn or memorize. You won’t be made to feel “out of place” and will be only asked to do the best of your abilities. We cater to all fitness levels so that no one is left behind. There are 3 challenge levels offered. We address aerobic (requiring oxygen workout) and anaerobic conditioning, endurance, mental focus, flexibility, and more. Not only will you gain a sense of increased energy but also experience weight loss, better mental health via stress management and other emotional benefits. We offer a non-competitive, supportive and friendly environment where you make new friends with similar interests in and out of the gym. Which level should I join? If you are new to this program it is strongly suggested that you join the Beginners classes (see schedule) if only to learn the exercise protocol and be familiar with the coaching methodology and movements. You will be invited to join the next level once you have learnt a good foundation of basic posture and balance. There are 3 levels in the FIZFIT Workouts: Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced. Each level allows people to workout at different intensities and abilities. We also offer the classes on a Personal Training and semi-Personal basis if you prefer privacy or your schedule does not allow you to join the Group sessions. How many people in a class? Sometimes are there 20 and other times there are 3. The people who come to the FIZFIT Workout vary their attendance due to work, family and personal reasons. The typical athlete in the class is a late-20 to 30-something executive or white collar worker. There is a healthy community of expat members too. Mostly local folk from around the Klang Valley. As the gym is in Bangsar, we are conveniently located for people who live and work in the Mont Kiara, Damansara and PJ areas. We have numerous members working in the KLCC area and residing in Ampang but they brave through the traffic for their weekly workout session. Most are in the program for stress management and weight loss. Some are competitive athletes in adventure racing, triathlons, and combat sports. All are Life Athletes. How do you know when we are “fit”? The best judge of that is yourself of course. We conduct fat percentage measurements every month to track the member’s progress. We feel this result is a better indication of a person’s overall health than the gross weight or the Body Mass Index (which was created by Lambert Adolphe Jacques Quatelet (1796-1874) somewhere around 1830). People were generally smaller then, more active and had a different diet. Asians also tend to be of a smaller and slighter build. Generally, you will feel an increase in you energy levels, greater attention span, experience less fatigue and are able to continue a physical activity for greater duration. One member reported that he carried his young sons for a few hours continuously on an overseas trip during the summer without feeling tired! The boys loved it that their dad was strong and the mom was impressed so she signed up too! You will notice a change in your wardrobe. It usually happens slowly but steadily. Your pant size will decrease and soon your current wardrobe doesn’t fit nicely anymore because you’ve shed all the weight. Time to go shopping ladies. Mostly you will know because when you meet people you haven’t seen in some time, they will remark that you look great, and typically ask how you lost so much weight. For the competitive athlete they will notice they don’t “gas out” as easily and can sustain their physical performance for better times/distance (or whatever criteria it is they are competing for). We’ve had folks who consistently finish in the top 10 of whatever events they compete in and these are weekend warriors who have desk jobs and mortgages like everyone else. Do I need to wear shoes? No you don’t need shoes. However, if you have injuries which require foot support (e.g. plantar fasciitis strains, ankle or toe injuries) please wear INDOOR only shoes for hygiene and to prevent transporting microbes and bacteria onto the mats. Ringworm and Staphylococcus infections are easily and accidentally brought in and are highly contagious.) When we conduct our training outdoors then obviously you will require a good pair of running shoes and socks. Sometimes we workout in the public parks or other locations (like Cameron Highlands) What is a Kettlebell? A kettlebell is a cast iron weight which looks like an old-fashioned kettle without a spout. It is “old school” exercise equipment which has a centuries old tradition in Eastern and Central Europe. It is a completely portable tool which provides a total body workout. Some even call it a “gym in your hand”. This old tool has recently been resurrected by the Russians living in N.America and over the past few years, many fitness enthusiasts have been amazed by its simplicity and effectiveness in weight loss, strength gains and cardiovascular development. There are women’s and men’s weights. People of all ages can exercise with these wonderful tools. Kettlebells are cast in 8kg, 12kg, 16kg, 20kg, 24kg and 32kg. We provide a small selection of kettlebells at the gym but the full range are available for sale. To purchase please visit our kettlebell website at www.kdtathletics.com Do you have social events? Great workouts, sensible nutrition and a fun group of friends is the tip of the iceberg. In addition to providing a positive and enjoyable lifestyle, many of the members get together outside of the gym for dinners, cultural events, movies and generally hanging out. Many end up as team mates on athletic competitions while others strike up mutual business interests. Are there changing rooms? Yes, there are separate mens’ and womens’ changing rooms and toilets. However, the management does not permit the showers and sauna facility to be used as these are reserved for residents and their families.
Can I bring my kids? We love kids but in a room full of weights = potentially dangerous equipment and full grown adults running about or swinging weights around at full speed, it’s a bad idea to let your kids run about. We can't afford a kid distracting us either when we're swinging a weight or having kids running around in a room full of flying knees and elbows. Thank you in advance for your cooperation. It would be irresponsible for us to allow kids in the gym and we don’t want to have any injuries or to disrupt the other members. We don't teach kids classes and a lot of the exercises are not suitable for growing kids. When is a kid no longer a kid? The youngest age we allow on the mats is 13 years old. They will be considered full paying members. We don’t have baby-sitting facilities so it would be best to leave the kids at home.
